3 Ways to Actually Shop for the Person Who Says They Don’t Need Anything

You know the person. They already have the candles. The journal sits on their nightstand, mostly unused, a little guilt-inducing every time they see it. Every year you circle the same problem: they’re impossible to shop for precisely because they don’t want more things. What they want is more room to breathe, and that’s not something you can wrap.

Here’s what actually tends to work, once you stop looking for another object.

1

Give them something that arrives more than once Most gifts peak the moment they’re unwrapped and fade from there. Look instead for anything that keeps showing up on its own — a letter that arrives monthly, a small ritual that returns without them having to maintain it. The gift isn’t the object anymore. It’s the recurrence.

2

Give them permission, not another task A lot of “self-care” gifts quietly become one more thing to manage — light the candle, remember the journal, find the time. What actually lands with someone who has enough things is something that asks nothing of them in return. It shows up, it’s theirs to enjoy or ignore, no guilt either way.

3

Give them a reason that isn’t about you remembering their exact taste You don’t have to guess their favorite scent, their exact aesthetic, their current mood. Look for something built around a broader idea they already gravitate toward — art, slowness, quiet — rather than a hyper-specific object you’re hoping lands.

This is basically the whole idea behind gifting the Maison Eviève yearly membership. A letter arrives in their mailbox each month, on your behalf, and a magazine arrives each quarter — twelve small, recurring invitations to slow down, instead of one object destined for a drawer. It’s less a gift and more a standing appointment with rest, paid for in advance.

Remember to take as much time as you need, and meet me at the next one.

Love, Evi
