Most of us drink our first coffee half reading, half thinking about the day. It's gone before we've tasted it.
This is the opposite: one cup, ten minutes, all five senses. And a painting to look at while it cools.
The still life that seems to hold its breath
In 1633, Francisco de Zurbarán painted three things on a dark ledge in Seville: a plate of lemons, a basket of oranges with their blossoms, and a cup of water beside a single pink rose. It's thought to be his only signed and dated still life. Everything sits in a row, lit from the left, against total darkness. Some art historians see it as a quiet religious offering; others simply as a study of stillness.
Francisco de Zurbarán, Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose, 1633. Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena
Look at it for a moment before you begin. Notice how nothing touches. Every object has room to breathe.
The meditation, sense by sense
- Sight. Set your cup down like Zurbarán's: alone, with space around it. Look at the colour of the coffee, the curve of the cup, the light on its rim.
- Touch. Hold the cup in both hands. Feel the warmth move into your palms and fingers. Notice where it's hottest.
- Smell. Bring it close and breathe in slowly, two or three times. Is it nutty, chocolatey, bright like citrus? There's no wrong answer.
- Sound. Before you sip, listen. The faint clink of the cup, the room around you, your own swallow.
- Taste. Take a small sip and let it rest on your tongue. Notice the bitterness first, then whatever comes after. Swallow and feel the warmth travel down.
- Look back at the painting. Then take the next sip just as slowly.
When the cup is empty, sit for one more breath before you stand up. You'll carry a little of that stillness into the morning.
If you'd like to take this further, here's a coffee ritual inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony, or a sensory meditation for people who think too much.
Something to read with your cup
"(letters) On Art" sends a letter and a postcard to your door each month, with the seasonal printed issue of "(meditating) On Art". The kind of post you open slowly, with a coffee.
Remember to take as much time as you need, and meet me at the next one.
