After dinner, the phone goes into a drawer. And suddenly, the evening stretches out in front of you, long and quiet, the way evenings used to be.
This isn't about willpower or a digital detox. It's about pleasure. An evening without a screen can be one of the most elegant luxuries left: time that belongs only to you, and to whoever is with you.
Here are some ways to fill those hours with something lovely.
Set the scene
Make the transition visible. Dim the overhead lights and turn on lamps. Light a candle. Put on a record. Change into something soft. These small gestures tell your body the day is over and the evening has begun.
Rituals for the hours you get back
1. Read a real book, for an hour. Not a chapter squeezed in before sleep: a whole, generous hour. 2. Write a letter. To a friend, a grandparent, a pen pal. Slowly, by hand. 3. Play a game. Cards, chess, a puzzle on the table that stays there all week. 4. Cook something slow. A soup that simmers, a cake that fills the house with its smell. 5. Listen to an album from start to finish, without doing anything else. 6. Draw, paint, embroider, knit. Something with your hands. 7. Have a long conversation. With your partner, a friend, your children, over a cup of tea. 8. Take an evening walk. Look at lit windows and the sky after dark. 9. Take a bath with a book and a candle. 10. Do nothing at all. Sit by the window and let the evening be.
A few practical tips
Choose a time and a place for the phone: 8 p.m., the drawer in the hall. Tell people you love that you're harder to reach in the evening. Keep a paper notebook nearby for things you'd normally look up; you can do it in the morning.
What you might notice
Evenings feel longer. Sleep may come more easily. And there's a particular quiet satisfaction in reaching the end of a day you actually remember.
Something for the drawer-free evenings
The Letter & Magazine subscription sends you a letter and a postcard every month, with a meditation and a story about art inside, plus a seasonal issue of "(meditating) On Art". The perfect thing to open on a screen-free evening, by lamplight.
Remember to take as much time as you need, and meet me at the next one.
