Think about the first thing you see when you open your eyes in the morning. For many of us, it's a phone screen, lit up with notifications before we've even sat up. Then perhaps a ceiling, a wardrobe, a pile of clothes on a chair.
What if, instead, the first thing you saw was a piece of art you love?
The bedroom is the most private room in a home, and the one where we're most vulnerable: half asleep, tired, just waking. The art we hang there touches us at the edges of the day, when our defenses are down. It deserves to be chosen with care.
What to look for
1. Calm over excitement. Bedroom art should soothe, not stimulate. Soft colors, gentle subjects, plenty of space. 2. Something you won't tire of. You'll see it every single day. Choose a piece with enough depth to keep revealing small details. 3. A feeling you want to wake up with. Peace, tenderness, lightness, courage. Decide first, then look for art that carries it. 4. Something personal. A print bought on a trip, a gift from someone you love, a painting connected to a memory.
Where to hang it
- Facing the bed, so it's the first thing you see when you wake. This is the most powerful spot. - Above the bed, for a calm, anchored feeling. Leave enough space above the headboard, and choose lightweight frames, securely fixed. - Beside the bed, at seated eye level, for something you look at while reading at night.
A small waking ritual
Before reaching for your phone, look at the art for three breaths. Notice the light on it: in the morning, it's never quite the same as the day before. Then begin your day.
A quiet piece for your bedroom
My print Blue Toile n.1 is a fragment of a modernized toile de Jouy pattern, in soft blue: a gentle, storybook image to wake up to. Each print is hand-finished, signed, and comes with a meditation letter for your mornings or evenings. Let the day begin with something beautiful.
Remember to take as much time as you need, and meet me at the next one.
Love, Evi
