Gratitude lists don't work for everyone. Try a beauty list instead

Gratitude lists don't work for everyone. Try a beauty list instead

"Write three things you're grateful for." It's one of the most common pieces of wellbeing advice, and for many people it works beautifully.

For others, it slowly turns into a chore. The same three answers every night: health, family, a roof. Or worse, a quiet sense of guilt: shouldn't I feel more grateful than I do? On hard days, being told to be thankful can feel like being told not to complain.

If that's you, try something lighter: a beauty list.

What a beauty list is

Each evening, write down a few beautiful things you noticed during the day. Not things you own, not things you should be thankful for: things that caught your eye, your ear, your heart.

- The light on the building across the street at 5 p.m. - A child singing to herself on the bus. - The smell of the bakery on the corner. - A woman's red scarf against a grey sky. - Steam rising from a cup of coffee. - The painting on a museum postcard you found in a book.

Why it can work better

A gratitude list asks you to evaluate your life. A beauty list only asks you to notice it. There's no right answer, no moral weight, no comparison. And because you know you'll be writing it in the evening, you start looking for beauty during the day. That's the real gift: your attention changes.

How to keep one

1. Use a small notebook, kept by your bed or in your bag. 2. Write three things, or one, or ten. No rules. 3. Be specific. Not "nature", but "the yellow leaves stuck to the wet pavement on rue de Rivoli". 4. Include art. A painting, a song, a line in a book. 5. Reread it on difficult days. A page of small beautiful things is surprisingly comforting.

Your beauty collection

The Collector's Diary is a free printable journal with a short guided meditation, made for collecting moments with art: where you met a work, what you noticed first, what your senses took in, how it made you feel. A beauty list, with frames.

Remember to take as much time as you need, and meet me at the next one.
